Aunt Sally-Mae is a 4 year old female Cross-Breed. This dear girl is a medium sized dog, approximately 1-2 “ smaller than a Collie and around 20 kg. Sally has traveled over 2,000 miles from Romania to the United Kingdom. In the most recent months. Sally had lived in a private care shelter, where she was looked after. However, before that time, Sally was rescued from a PKS (Public Kill Shelter), which is the modern day version of a hell for a dog.
Sally was near deaths door and starving beyond all reasoning. It is very common for the dogs confined to these death camps, to be purposely starved for the pleasure and entertainment of the workers. There have been cases of the dogs being so close to starvation, that they would turn on each other, in order to suppress the hunger. Sally was fortunate to escape this hell, and get to a safer place.
Now, this dear deserving soul resides with us, in Glinton, Peterborough, whilst she awaits her forever home. Her past has left her with a few bad memories, but every day we are continuing to build new ones, that will eventually outweigh the bad ones. Food is a very sensitive area of Sally’s existence, and she is still uncertain about when or if her next meal will come. As a result, she will ask to be left alone whilst she eats, fearful that you’ll take away the only thing that kept her fighting heart beating. Imagine sitting at a table for one, in your favourite restaurant. A stranger approaches you and attempts to take some of your food.
How would you feel? Would you object? You decide to leave, and take yourself to a quiet bench to enjoy your meal. The same stranger follows you, sits beside you and attempts to hold your hands, cuddle and snuggle up to you. Again, how would you feel, how would you respond? You’d probably feel violated. Wouldn’t be better if this stranger took the time to get to know and understand you, before moving too fast? I believe that is almost how some dogs may feel, about our behaviour towards them. They may object, in the only way that they know how. A bark, shying away or simply by snapping.
But, given love, time, patience and understanding it is certainly possible to convey a healthier message, a better approach that will benefit all of us. Sally is a very affectionate individual, but requires someone that will give her the time that she needs. Someone that can give her the space that she needs, and with that the relationship and trust can blossom.
Sally would suit a retired home, or environment without any young children as they may simply ask too much too soon. Ideally the applicants should live within 40 miles of PE6, Peterborough so that the journey for Sally is not too stressful. This girl is vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, microchipped, neutered and looking for that special and understanding home.
